About the Marlborough Sounds

Nestled at the top of the South Island, the Marlborough Sounds stretches from the golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park in the west, through tranquil inlets and forested slopes to the renowned Marlborough wine region in the east. The two main towns, Nelson and Marlborough share the record for the highest number of annual sunshine hours in the whole of New Zealand.
Nelson is a coastal town, the gateway to the Abel Tasman, with a quiet and friendly atmosphere and a host of arts and craft shops and studios, including sculptors, painters and glass blowers. Nelson is also home to the Museum of Wearable Art, a place with inspiring combinations of art and the human form.
Blenheim is the centre of the world renowned Marlborough wine industry and beautiful fresh food with a healthy restaurant and cafe culture, two art galleries and live music venues. Our Walk The Sounds tour also incorporates a visit to Kaikoura further along the coast, one of the world's premier sites for whale and dolphin encounters. The Marlborough Sounds have a warm temperate climate and are particularly beautiful in spring and autumn. Occasional rain showers mean you would be advised to bring a rain jacket and a fleece or sweater for cooler evenings at those times. Summers are warm in daytime and evening.
