About Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay has a pleasant sunny, dry and warm Mediterranean climate, sometimes with showery spells. In April and May (late Summer-Autumn) the days are a comfortable warm temperature for walking, though evenings are cooler. September to November (Spring) is also mild or warm in the day and cooler in the evening. Summers are dry and warm in daytime and evening. In Autumn the vines turn spectacular shades of red and gold, giving the landscape a magical quality. In early Spring, the surrounding ranges have an icing-sugar dusting of snow on the tops making a stunning backdrop.
In the Spring and Autumn the light is sharp and the air is clear, and views
are usually best at these times of year.
Napier, our base in Hawke's Bay, was destroyed by an earthquake and resulting fires in 1931. Earth movement during the earthquake created hundreds of square kilometres of new land along the east coast, and where Napier had been a small town on a headland, it now extends back to the clearly visible original cliff line further inland. The rebuilding of the city in the Art Deco style of the time has made Napier a beacon in world Art Deco architecture alongside South Beach, Miami and San Francisco, California.
