FAQs
How easy is the walking?
If you are reasonably fit and in good health you will enjoy our walks. You will need to carry a small backpack with your needs for the day including water and your lunch. Most day walks are 2-4 hours at a relaxed pace on well surfaced tracks on mostly undulating land, and we offer tours in the early and late summer in milder temperatures as well as in the warmest months. The Glacier Hike on the 'Walk the Glaciers' tour is easy for most walkers and crampons are provided. The Tongariro Crossing on the 'Walk the Volcanoes' tour is worth the challenge, but we can take those who prefer on other walks in the Tongariro National Park.
What is the accommodation like?
All our accommodation is in modern 3-4* hotels with an excellent standard of decor. All rooms have private facilities. This is what makes Easywalking Holidays different to most other walking tours which use huts and less luxurious surroundings. We believe an essential part of your holiday is relaxing in comfort after a day in the breathtaking New Zealand countryside.
Is there a Single Supplement?
An Easywalking Holiday is deal for single travellers, we will accommodate you with another guest of the same gender, so you pay no single supplement. Or you can guarantee a private room with an extra payment subject to availability.
Which meals are included?
Breakfast - Continental breakfasts are provided on all days.
Lunch - You will need to provide your lunches on all days. These are mostly packed lunches although when we are in a town it is of course possible to eat out. We can shop for lunch food when we arrive.
Evening Meal - These are provided on the first and last night of every tour. On the remaining 2 or 3 nights you can eat out in local cafes or restaurants, with prices to suit all budgets.
Are airport transfers included?
All tours start and finish within easy reach of an airport. On the South Island tours we collect and return you to Christchurch and Wellington airports, and on the North Island, from Rotorua and Napier, which have frequent direct flights from Auckland and other major NZ cities. We will confirm your airport transfer needs when we confirm your booking. If you wish to stay at our accommodation on the night before or after the tour, we’ll book this for you subject to availability.
How large are the groups?
Do I need to bring any special equipment?
The most important thing is a pair of comfortable walking shoes, trainers or light hiking boots for the walks. All walks are on well made gravel tracks or back country roads. Boots support your ankles and have a thick sole to cushion your foot. Mt Tarawera and the Tongariro Crossing (Walk the Volcanoes Tour) have rough ground and boots are advised.
You will need a small day pack which leaves your hands free and is comfortable, in which to carry your lunch, water and anything else for the day. In Autumn and Spring days can be mild (which is good for walking!), but we may encounter rain showers so a waterproof jacket (trousers if you wish to bring them) and an extra sweater or fleece for when we stop are strongly recommended, and essential for the Tongariro Crossing and Glacier Hikes.
The sun is very strong even in Autumn and Spring, so sunscreen and a hat are essential for when you are outdoors for spells of the day. Also, you are better protected from the sun with cover-up clothing than with sunscreen alone.
What about the Tongariro Crossing and Mount Tarawera?
The Crossing is optional and dependent upon favourable weather. It is prohibited when the weather is poor. For both these mountain walks it is more advisable to have boots as the ground is rough. For the Crossing, if you need walking poles (a great help on the downhill sections) they, and all other gear can be hired on the day. Sturdy closed footwear and outdoor clothing is needed for both the Crossing and Mount Tarawera as the temperature can drop and the surfaces are uneven, with loose ash in some parts.
Do I need to know about wine to enjoy the winery tours?
No previous knowledge is needed. If you are interested, you can enjoy finding out about wine production and wineries during the tour.

Is a holiday in New Zealand for me?
Think you know New Zealand? It is a country of stunning landscapes and warm, friendly people. It has a relaxed pace of life compared to other developed countries and has all the modern comforts of home. The light here is different - sharp and bright and the air is clear. Walking New Zealand’s back country roads and tracks brings you right up close to the natural outdoors and its quiet calm. The geologically young volcanics provide striking landforms which give a sense of the great forces beneath. It's a country you will take to your heart and we guarantee you will want to return!
